Lecture Abstract:
The future of Iran hangs in the balance. Following the US/Israel attacks of 28 February 2026, the Republic has suffered the greatest shocks since it came into being following the revolution of 1979. The killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei following 37 years of brutal and oppressive rule, has propelled a new generation to power under his son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei. What should one expect now for the Islamic regime and the long-suffering people of Iran? Will it survive or will regime change become a reality? What are the implications for the region and geopolitics? Nicholas Hopton, newly appointed Honorary Professor for Diplomacy and International Relations, will discuss all this and more in his inaugural lecture.
